Truman Women Place First at Northwest Invitational Track & Field Meet
Coming off a first-place finish at the Northwest Missouri State Invitational on the weekend, the Truman women's track & field team will head to Emporia, Kan. this weekend for the Division II Challege, hosted by Emporia State University.
The Bulldog women scored 109.5 points on Saturday (April 6) to take first place in the 17-team invitational in Maryville, Mo. Second place went to 2002 NCAA Division II indoor champion North Dakota State, which competed at less than full strength. The 'Dogs, however, managed top-three finishes in 10 events.
Posting victories for Truman were seniors Beth Luebbering (St. Thomas, Mo./Helias) and Megan Williams (Columbia, Mo./Hickman). Williams won the 100-meter hurdles by nearly one-quarter of a second, turning in a time of 14.15 seconds. That mark improves Williams' NCAA Division II provisional qualifying standard.
Luebbering posted a win in the 10,000-meter run, finishing in 38:17.60. Second place in the event went to Luebbering's junior teammate Alisha Smyth (Fairbanks, Alaska/Lathrop).
Freshman Christina Winkler (High Ridge, Mo./Northwest) garnered an NCAA D-II provisional qualifying time in the 400-meter hurdles as she finished second in 1:02.58.
Junior Jill Lowry (Jefferson City, Mo.) tallied the Bulldogs' other provisional mark on the weekend, as she placed second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.12 seconds. Her provisional time came in the prelims, when Lowry ran faster, to the tune of 12.04 seconds. She also finished second in the 200-meter dash.
In the 5,000-meter run, junior Jennifer Tesmer (Harrisonville, Mo.) charted a second-place finish with her time of 18:14.00. Junior Suzanne Schmidt (Omaha, Neb./Elkhorn) also recorded a second-place clocking in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:39.45) to finish 10 seconds ahead of teammate Sonya Yamnitz (Hallsville, Mo./Helias).
The 'Dogs got second place in both the 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays. The 4x100 team included Williams, Lowry and seniors Kasye Hahn (St. Louis/Ladue) and Jamille Curry (Chicago/Morgan Park). Hahn, who also took third in the 400 meters, and Curry teamed up with Winkler and sophomore Candi Jones (Oskaloosa, Iowa) in the 4x400.
