Monica Marlowe and Shelby Ortwerth Named to AVCA All-America Teams
As the Truman volleyball team prepares for its upcoming NCAA Quarterfinals match against West Texas A&M on Thursday, more honors keep coming in for the two Bulldog seniors. Monica Marlowe (Aurora, Ill.) was named to the AVCA all-America second-team on Monday while teammate Shelby Ortwerth (Hannibal, Mo.) was named to the third-team.
Both Marlowe and Ortwerth earned first-team all-MIAA honors and South Central all-Region honors earlier this year. The two players are just the third and fourth volleyball athletes to be named to the all-America squad. Last year, Cassy Felkerson was a first-team selection while Eliza Hoerner earned second-team honors. Those two were the first all-Americas in school history.
Marlowe, a four-time first-team all-MIAA selection, is averaging 11.43 assists and 3.24 digs a game for Truman this season. She recently moved into the top 25 NCAA career list for assists and is currently 23rd with 5366 assists. Her career average of 11.47 assists per game would rank in the top 25 as well. Marlowe will end her career as Truman's leader in assists average and second all-time in career assists. She also ranks in the top 10 in nine other Truman career categories.
Ortwerth, who was also named to the South Central Region all-tournament team, averaged a team-high 3.83 kills and 3.71 digs in her first season as an outside hitter. She has 494 kills on the year, tied for eighth-most in a single-season at Truman, and is on pace to finish in the top 10 in kills per game and digs per game for a single-season. Ortwerth also has 23 kill/dig double-doubles on the year, third most for a Truman player.
