Kelly Vogel Joins Elite Club in 3-2 Bulldogs Comeback Win Over Columbia College

For the third time in four matches, the Truman volleyball team dropped the first two games before coming back to force a fifth game. The Bulldogs on Monday night at Pershing Arena rallied to score a 3-2 (26-30, 25-30, 30-25, 30-21, 15-13) victory over Columbia College, the defending NAIA National Champions.

Kelly Vogel was a big reason for Truman's comeback. She recorded 33 kills on the night, tying for the fourth-most in school history for a single-match. Only two other former Bulldogs have recorded over 30 kills in a match as Christie Hackmann achieved the feat seven times and Janelle Zehr did it two times in her career. Vogel's 33 kills came on 77 attempts and she made just seven errors for a .338 hitting percentage. She also had 17 digs and one block on the night.

Truman appeared to be in trouble in the deciding fifth game, down 12-8 at one point. However, the Bulldogs scored seven of the remaining eight points for the victory. Vogel had seven kills in the final game with five of them coming during Truman's final six points.

Shelby Orthwerth and Jessica Sears each recorded 16 kills for the Bulldogs. Orthwerth had a career-high 26 digs and Sears had double-figure dig totals with 16. Monica Marlowe had a team-high 53 assists and also had 15 digs. Lauren Dickbernd ended the game with 10 digs while Micaela Walter led Truman with six blocks.

The Cougars were led by Endrinha Sosa with 23 kills. Olga Benoit had 58 assists and Yesmina Moreno-Pino led the team with 23 digs and five blocks.

Truman, ranked 15th in NCAA Division II, improved to 19-6 on the season. Columbia College, ranked ninth in NAIA, fell to 21-3. The loss was just the Cougars fifth in the last five seasons. Another one of those losses occurred at Pershing Arena against Truman in 2000.

The Bulldogs will be off for 10 days before travelling to Southwest Baptist on Oct. 31.
