Monica Marlowe Records 5,000th Assist in 3-1 Truman Win Over Emporia State

Truman hit .327 on the afternoon, its third-best all-time in a four-game match, and held Emporia State to just a .092 hitting percentage as the Bulldogs won 3-1 (27-30, 30-8, 30-18, 30-23) over the Hornets Saturday afternoon at Pershing Arena.

Monica Marlowe, who is second all-time at Truman in assists and first in assist average, led the Bulldogs offense from the setter position, recording 47 assists during the match. Her final assist was on a kill by Jennifer Hunter and put Truman up 28-23 in the fourth game. It was also her 5000th career assists as she became just the second Truman player to hit that mark.

The turning point of the match came in the second game after Emporia State won the opening game. The Bulldogs gained the momentum back with a 30-8 win after not allowing the Hornets to score off of their serve and going on two 7-0 runs. Truman hit .441 in that game while Emporia State was a -.132.

Kelly Vogel had a strong afternoon for Truman with 22 kills, 12 digs and a .439 hitting percentage. Jessica Sears hit .400 with 12 kills and also added 11 digs and seven assists. Shelby Ortwerth had 15 kills and 13 digs and Jennifer Hunter had 10 kills and eight blocks. Marlowe also ended the game with double-digit digs with 13 and Lauren Dickbernd had 10 digs after playing the libero position for the first three games.

Emporia State was led by Alycia Ryff who had 13 kills and Kim Edwards who recorded 42 assists. Mandy Stratton led the team with 17 digs.

Truman will be at home again on Monday evening when it hosts Columbia College at 7 p.m.
