Volleyball Squad Debuts At No. 23 In Latest AVCA Poll
By opening the season with a 3-1 record, including a season-opening defeat of sixth-ranked North Dakota State, the Truman State University women's volleyball team entered this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25 poll at No. 23.
Truman opened the season at the University of Nebraska-Omaha/Ramada Inn Tournament on Friday winning 3-1 over North Dakota State, which entered the season ranked sixth in the preseason poll. Following the NDSU match, which lasted more than two hours, the Bulldogs faced their second nationally ranked opponent of the day, losing to host and fifth-ranked Nebraska-Omaha by a 3-1 margin. However, no game in the UNO match was decided by more than three points.
On Saturday, the 'Dogs bounced back for two more matches and came away with 3-0 victories over both Morningside (Iowa) and Colorado School of Mines.
Elsewhere in the latest poll, Central Missouri State, Truman's rival in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, is ranked 16th, South Central Regional foe North Alabama is 18th and Rockhurst is 22nd. Rockhurst, whom Truman faces on Saturday, is no longer part of the South Central Region.
This weekend, the squad travels to Kansas City, Mo. for the Rockhurst Tournament. On Friday, Truman opens at 3:30 p.m. against Texas Wesleyan and follows up with a match versus North Dakota at 7:30 p.m. Then on Saturday, the Bulldogs get under way with a 9:30 a.m. start against Rockhurst and wraps up with a 1:30 versus Midwestern State (Texas).
