Daktronics Division II All-South Central Region Volleyball Team Announced
Five members of the South Central Region champion Truman State University Bulldogs were named to the Daktronics All-South Central Region team announced today. Two players from the 37-2 Truman squad were picked for the first team in voting by sports information directors from around the region.
Truman seniors Cassy Felkerson and Jenny Glenn highlight the first-team honorees and are joined by the North Alabama's Nesrin Seckin and Ashley Moffit, Henderson State (Ark.)'s Lucy Arroyo and Central Missouri State's Jacque Barr. Those players will move on to the Daktronics All-America ballot.
Felkerson, a 6-0 senior middle hitter, led Truman with averages of 3.60 kills and 1.05 blocks per game while recording a hitting percentage of .328 for the year. Also this year, she has been named an AVCA First-Team All-America and the Most Valuable Player in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. Glenn, a 5-9 senior outside hitter, averaged 2.88 kills and 2.58 digs as the Bulldogs advanced to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight for the first time in school history and claimed their second consecutive Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association championship, but first outright.
Seckin and Moffitt were two key elements in another stellar season turned in by North Alabama, a South Central Regional finalist in 2001. Seckin, a senior right-side hitter and a repeat first-team AVCA All-America this year for UNA, led the team with averages of 5.17 kills and 2.93 digs while hitting .304. She was named the Gulf South Conference East Division Player of the Year in in 2001. Moffitt, the Lions' standout sophomore setter, team averaged 14.07 assists and also led the team in aces (0.53 per game). North Alabama finished 32-4 on the season and won the Gulf South Conference title.
Arroyo, a middle hitter, helped Henderson State (28-11) to the South Central Region semifinals and averaged 6.61 kills, 2.94 digs and 1.52 blocks per game. She also posted a .321 hitting percentage en route to earning second-team AVCA All-America and GSC West Division Player of the Year honors this year.
Barr led the Jennies (25-7) with 3.33 digs per game and finished second on the squad with an average of 0.29 service aces. Central Missouri State was also a South Central Region semifinalist and was the MIAA runner-up in 2001.
Barr, Moffitt and Seckin are all repeat first-team selections to the all-region team, which began last year. Felkerson was a second-team choice in 2000.
Second-team selections for 2001 include senior middle hitter Eliza Hoerner, junior setter Monica Marlowe and junior defensive specialist Shelby Ortwerth from Truman. Also picked for second-team accolades were senior middle hitter Ellen LaFiore of Alabama-Huntsville, sophomore outside hitter Dina Wathan of Pittsburg State (Kan.) and senior outside hitter Shamekia Williams from Fort Valley State (Ga.).
LaFiore was a first-team selection in 2000, while Marlowe and Williams are repeat second-team picks from a year ago.
The Daktronics All-America team will be announced on Dec. 18.
