No. 2-Ranked Volleyball Team Sweeps Through Henderson State Tourney
The No. 2-ranked Truman volleyball squad improved to 26-1 overall and ran its winning streak to 15 consecutive matches on Saturday with four wins at the Henderson State Lady Reddie Classic in Arkadelphia, Ark.
The 'Dogs also ran their consecutive games won streak to 19 as the team won 3-0 in each of its matches on the weekend.
On Friday, Truman opened with a 30-14, 30-12 and 30-18 win over NAIA opponent College of the Southwest (N.M.). The 'Dogs followed up later that evening with a 30-18, 30-17 and 30-22 triumph over Southern Arkansas. In the latter match senior Eliza Hoerner (Augusta, Mo./Washington-Univ of Colorado-Colo. Springs) hit .615 with 16 kills and no errors in 26 attempts. Senior Cassy Felkerson (Salem, Mo.) added 12 kills and just three errors in 28 attacks for a .321 attack percentage. For the match, Truman outhit SAU .345 to .151. Freshman Jessica Sears (Colchester, Ill.) added 15 digs and sophomore Rachael Shedd (Omaha, Neb./Westside) and junior Monica Marlowe (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) combined for 29 assists, with Shedd tallying 16.
Saturday's action saw the 'Dogs open with a 9:30 a.m. clash with Arkansas Tech and Truman garnered its second win of the year over the Golden Suns, 30-13, 30-20 and 30-24. Senior Jenny Glenn (Granby, Colo./Middle Park) led a Bulldog attack that saw the team hit .338 to ATU's .121 mark. Glenn finished with 13 kills and 12 digs while hitting .393. Hoerner and Felkerson had 12 and 11 kills, respectively, while hitting .414 and .421. Sears recorded sevent of the team's 11 service aces and Marlowe charted 39 assists and a team-best 16 digs.
In their final match of the tournament, Truman took on No. 24 Montevallo (Ala.) for the second time of the year and again emerged victorious with a 30-18, 30-19 and 30-14 win. Hoerner and Felkerson again dominated the Bulldog attack, recording 14 and 13 kills, respectively. Sears charted 11 kills and Marlowe put up 43 assists. Again, the Bulldogs were far superior in the hitting department, outshining Montevallo to the tune of .405 to .177. Hoerner hit .400 (14-2-30) while Felkerson hit .345 (13-3-29). Sophomore Jenna Buckner (Quincy, Ill.) rang up nine kills with no errors in 12 attempts, a .750 hitting percentage, while Glenn had a .364 percentage (9-1-22).
For the weekend, excluding the College of the Southwest match, the 'Dogs out-hit their foes .362 to .146 and averaged 18.67 kills, 2.56 aces and 19.22 digs. Sears had 11 of the team's 23 total aces in the three matches, averaging 1.22 per game. Hoerner had a .471 hitting percentage and led the team with 4.67 kills per game. Felkerson averaged four kills and 0.78 blocks and Glenn averaged 3.38 kills and hit .390.
Truman will get a week away from competition before returning to its home floor for a 4 p.m. meeting with Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville on Saturday (Oct. 20). The Bulldogs will then resume MIAA competition on Oct. 24 when they venture to Maryville to take on Northwest Missouri State.
