Central Missouri- 81, Truman-74

Truman State University would not go away, but a late Central Missouri State Jennies charge lifted the home team to an 81-74 victory in Warrensburg Saturday afternoon.

The Jennies (12-5, 5-3 MIAA) got a career-high 28 points from freshman point guard Ashley Millham, who went the distance in the contest. Millham added five steals and four assists in leading Central to victory. Senior forward Jena Shackelford tacked on 19 points and five assists as she hit five three-pointers, and Anna Rorvig and Bethany Orendorff put down 12 and 11 points, respectively. Orendorff added a career-best eight assists to go with six rebounds.

At the break, the Jennies held a 40-37 advantage after hitting a sizzling 65.4 percent of their shots. Central got up as much as seven twice in the opening stanza, but 10 turnovers, coupled with 53.1 percent shooting by the Bulldogs (7-9, 1-7 MIAA), kept the game tight throughout the opening period.

In the second half, Central protected the ball much better, committing just four turnovers. They also continued to shot the ball, knocking down 50 percent of their shots, 6-of-11 (54.5 percent) from three-point range, while holding Truman to just 37.9 percent shooting from the floor. Twice in the second half the lead was cut to a single point.

But each time the Jennies responded. At 5:19 Sarah Sommer made it 69-68, but Central went on to out-score its guest 12-6 the rest of the way.

Sommer had a double-double for Truman with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Jamie Huffman tacked on 16 points, while Emily Turnbull and Megan Patti each had 11.

Central Missouri-66, Truman-65

Central Missouri State University's Mules improved to 13-4, 5-3 in MIAA play as they held on for a 66-65 win over Truman State University in Warrensburg Saturday.

The Mules were out-shot (43.4-to-37.5), outrebounded (40-to-32), and hit just 60 percent of their free throws. But Central forced 14 Bulldog turnovers and out-scored its guest 17-8 off those miscues.

CMSU led 37-28 at the half, but Truman went on a 13-2 run to open the second stanza to take a 41-39 lead. The rest of the way it was a battle, but in the end the Mules finally were able to knock down their free throws (11-of-12 in the final 6:54) to pull out the win.

With a chance to ice it, Jeremy McFall's half court pass was stolen by Grant Agbo with :12 on the clock. Truman immediately called timeout to set up a play, but Andy Calmes' shot missed its mark and the clock ran out as both teams scrambled for the rebound.

Pat Schumacher and Reggie Soward each hit for 12 points. Schumacher added seven rebounds. Derek Weber and Brian Rhodes each scored 10. Rhodes also had seven boards and three steals in the contest.

Truman was led by Agbo with 18 points and seven rebounds, while Matt Beran chimed in with 16 points, seven boards, and a pair of blocked shots.
