Pittsburg State-85, Truman-70

Seniors Stephanie Shanline and Katie Spieker scored 17 points apiece in their final game at John Lance Arena to lead Pittsburg State University to an 85-70 victory over Truman State University in the regular season final for both teams.

Pitt State led just 51-47 with 11:26 to play in the game, but the Gorillas scored eight of the next 10 points to widen their margin to double digits, 66-56, with 6:39 remaining.

The Gorillas literally won the game at the foul line, connecting on 36 of 41 charity shots, as the Bulldogs were whistled for 30 personal fouls on the afternoon. PSU enjoyed a 25-point advantage at the free throw line, with Truman going 11 of 19 from the stripe.

Freshman Maggie Apt had a career day for Pitt State, finishing with 16 points and seven rebounds. Junior Kami Scrivner added 16 points for the Gorillas as well.

Senior Adri Tromp had a team-high 14 points and nine rebounds in her final game for the Bulldogs, before fouling out with 4:51 to play.

Truman assistant Marne Fauser coached the Bulldogs in head coach John Sloop's absence. Sloop missed the game due to an illness in his family.

Pittsburg State-86, Truman-80

Eddie Jackson scored a career-high 39 points to lead Pittsburg State to an 86-80 win over Truman in the regular season finale at John Lance Arena Saturday (Feb. 28).

Jackson scored 14 of his points in a decisive run during the final 7:41 of the first half, as Pitt State (17-10, 9-9 MIAA) turned a 23-23 game into a 50-31 advantage at the intermission. The Cleburne, Texas, native had 22 points in the first half, and he scored seven of the Gorillas' final eight points in the final 1:53 to ice the game.

Truman (6-21, 3-15 MIAA) trailed by as many as 26 points, at 57-31, with 16:53 to play in the game, but the Bulldogs scratched their way back into the game down the stretch.

Truman trailed by six points, 83-77, when Jon Hardy missed two free throws with 22.1 seconds remaining. PSU's Jamey Richardson rebounded his second miss, but was whistled for a traveling violation and then accessed a technical foul.

Chip Sodemann made two free throws to trim the margin to 83-79 and Hardy then made one of two free throws to make it an 83-80 game two seconds later.

Richardson made one of two free throws with 15 seconds remaining, and after a Truman turnover Jackson sealed the win with two free throws with 7.4 seconds to play.

Richardson, playing in his final home game for PSU, logged his 14th double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Austin Kirby had a team-high 16 points coming off the Truman bench. Sodemann added 12 points, while Andy Calmes chipped in with 10. Matt Beran had seven points and a team-high nine rebounds in his final game for the Bulldogs.
