Truman: First-year coach John Sloop is enjoying his first winning record as the Truman women have put together two straight wins after dropping the season opener. The Bulldogs, 2-1 overall, kicked off the 2000-01 season by splitting a pair of games at the Quincy (Ill.) tournament. The Bulldogs fell 73-71 to Tampa (Fla.) in the opener and beat Quincy 50-48 the following night. The 'Dogs' latest victory was at the expense of St. Joseph's (Ind.) 99-66 in the home opener on Nov. 24.
Truman vs. St. Joseph's: Three Bulldogs charted double-doubles as the Truman women's basketball team defeated St. Joseph's College (Ind.) 99-66 last Saturday night. The Pumas fell behind by 20 points at the half, shooting just 28 percent from the field in the first period.
The Bulldogs shot 70 percent in the second half and were 49.4 percent from the field for the game. They also hit 14-of-18 charity shots and a total of nine buckets from beyond the arc.
Junior forward/center Jennifer Fisher (Fordland, Mo./Marshfield) led Truman with a career high 25 points, along with 10 rebounds. In addition, she had a career high with five three-pointers, sinking all five attempts. Fisher also led the squad with three blocks and four steals for the night. She hit both her free throws and was 9-of-11 from the field for the game.
Junior transfer guard Jessy Fletcher (Atlanta, Mo./John Woods CC) had 15 points and 14 rebounds, 11 defensively, while freshman forward Annie Westhoff (Webster Groves, Mo.) had her first game with double figures, putting up 16 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Fletcher also led the team with six assists.
Junior guard Tessa Thurman (Atlanta, Mo./John Wood) rounded out the double figure scorers for Truman with 11 points, including three treys.
The win marked the fourth straight victory for the Truman women's basketball team in home openers, and the first win over St. Joseph's in the now two-game series.
About Rockhurst: The Lady Hawks are 3-1 after beating St. Joseph's in Kirksville on Saturday, 75-58. The only blemish on the Rockhurst record is a 64-58 defeat at the hands of the Missouri Southern Lady Lions in Joplin last Tuesday.
The Lady Hawks opened the 2000-01 campaign with a pair of wins in their own Rockhurst Tip Off Classic, 61-55 over McKendree (Ill.) and 67-57 against Park University.
Junior forward Elaine Williams led the Lady Hawks vs. St. Joseph's, putting up 17 points and grabbing seven rebounds. She was 5-of-11 from the field, sinking her only three-pointer and all six free throws. Sophomore guards Jacquie Rzesut and Amber Krumbholz also scored in double figures with 10 and 13 points, respectively. Krumbholz had six rebounds and a team-high five assists, while Rzesut and freshman guard Lacole Hook each had two treys.
Series Records: The series is even at 2-2. In 1998-99, Truman and Rockhurst met twice with each team winning on its home court. The Bulldogs were the last to register a victory, beating the Lady Hawks 89-56 on Jan. 23, 1999, while RU won 62-58 on Dec. 17, 1998. On Nov. 15, 1997, the 'Dogs lost 58-56 at Rockhurst, and on Nov. 25, 1996, Truman won 75-65 at home.
In the last meeting in Kirksville, now junior center Jennifer Perkins (Ft. Dodge, Iowa/St. Edmund) scored 10 points, while Gerber, a freshman then, charted four points on a three-pointer and a free throw and had two assists in 12 minutes of action.
