Women's Cross Country Finishes Sixth at Southern Stampede

The Truman State University women's cross country team finished sixth out of 14 schools on Saturday at the Missouri Southern State College Southern Stampede in Joplin, Mo. The 'Dogs tallied a team score of 151 to finish six points back of fifth-place Missouri Southern.

The Bulldogs, ranked No. 5 in the preseason national poll, weren't orginally slated to attend the meet, but turned to the Southern Stampede late last week after a meet originally on Truman's schedule, the Iowa State Invitational, was cancelled.

Senior Beth Luebbering (St. Thomas, Mo./Jefferson City Helias) led the 'Dogs by placing 23rd overall with a time of 23:15.00. Junior Suzanne Schmidt (Omaha, Neb./Elkhorn) and senior Jody Shanks (Liberty, Mo.) also garnered top-30 finishes by placing 28th and 30th, respectively. Schmidt completed the course in 23:21.40 while Shanks finished in 23:28.40. Junior Jennifer Tesmer (Harrisonville, Mo.) made it four Truman finishers in the top 31 by placing 31st in 23:29.60.

Southwest Missouri State University won the meet by four points over Pittsburg State (Kan.), 51-55.

The Bulldogs will have this weekend off before competing again on Sept. 29 at the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis.
