Women's Cross Country Squad Finishes First at Western Illinois
The Truman State University women's cross country team opened its 2001 season on Saturday with a strong showing at the Western Illinois University Early Bird Invitational. Truman captured first place out of three teams competing, finishing with a total score of 20. Western Illinois came in second with 43, followed by Monmouth College (Ill.) with 84.
The Bulldogs placed seven runners in the top eight at the meet, led by senior Beth Luebbering (St. Thomas, Mo./Jefferson City Helias), who was second overall with a time of 14:56 on the 4,000-meter course. Third place went to Truman junior Leah Zidon (Bondurant, Iowa/Bondurant-Farrar) with a time of 15:00. Junior Suzanne Schmidt was fourth in 15:08, followed by junior Jennifer Tesmer (Harrisonville, Mo.) in fifth (15:12), sophomore Sonya Yamnitz (Hallsville, Mo./Jefferson City Helias) in sixth (15:14), senior Emily Komiskey (Galena, Ill./Dubuque Wahlert) in seventh (15:18) and senior Jody Shanks (Liberty, Mo.) in eighth (15:20).
Truman, the defending Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association champion, will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Nebraska-Omaha/Creighton Invitational.
