Women's Soccer Team Travels to Southern Indiana
Date: October 15, 2000
Time: 2 p.m. Sunday
Location: University of Southern Indiana, Evansville
Game 1: Truman State University Bulldogs (Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association/NCAA Division II) vs. University of Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles (Great Lakes Valley/NCAA Div. II).
Truman: In the Bulldogs' seven consecutive wins, they have outscored their opponents 21-2. Posting three shutouts last week, Truman has not been scored on in 540 minutes of play. Junior Melissa Miller (Olathe, Kan.) and junior Stephanie Cepicky (Omaha, Neb./Duchesne) each have four team leading goals -- they are among 14 players who have found the net. Junior goalkeeper Emily Huyck (Omaha, Neb./Westside) has 70 saves.
Truman vs. Quincy: Foreshadowing the game's outcome, junior Nicole Thorpe (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) connected with sophomore Anna Smith (Jefferson City, Mo.) in the second minute. Truman held its 1-0 lead through the remainder of a defensive first period. Once again the 'Dogs exploded both on both sides of the ball after the break. Aggressive defense allowed Quincy only two shots in the second period. Junior Molly Adams (Omaha, Neb./Marian Univ.) assisted Pohren in the 47th minute to get things started. Miller caught a pass from freshman Stephanie Cepicky (St. Louis/Lind-bergh) to extend Truman's lead. Senior Niki Taylor (Crestwood, Mo./Lindbergh) dished one up to sophomore Becky Ojile (St. Louis/Nerinx Hall) and sophomore Carrie Hegenderfer (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/John F. Kennedy) hooked up with sophomore Heather Murry (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles West) in the 76th minute putting the 'Dogs past Quincy 5-0.
Truman vs. Rockhurst: While the Bulldogs' offense may have been subdued, their defense was not. Miller and Cepicky connected early for the game's only goal. Huyck had another quiet game as Truman's stifling defense allowed only three shots.
Truman vs. St. Joseph's: The broken record played on as the Bulldogs posted shutout number three last week. One very wide shot was the only action Huyck saw for 90 minutes. Pohren gave the 'Dogs a first period lead scoring an unassisted goal. Taylor made good on a penalty kick in the 69th minute and Truman picked up another win.
This week's Opponent: Southern Indiana is having a strong season with a 10-2 record for proof. They have posted wins over Missouri-Rolla 1-0, Evergreen State (Wash.) 6-0, Pacific Lutheran (Wash.) 1-0, Hawaii Pacific 1-0, Kentucky Wesleyan 2-0, Bellaramine (Ken.) 1-0, Lewis (Ill.) 1-0, Indiana/Purdue-Fort Wayne 3-0, St. Joseph's 3-0, and Indianapolis 1-0. They owe losses to Southern Oregon 1-0 and Northern Kentucky 2-0. Kristen Light has six team-leading goals and Heather Heseman has 20 saves.
Series Record: Truman leads the all time series 2-0-1. In the last meeting, then sophomore, Missy Ell (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) scored the Bulldogs' only goal as they won 1-0.
Head coach Mike Cannon: Truman head coach Mike Cannon is in his eighth season with the Bulldogs. He is the winningest coach in Truman history and was ranked 17th by percentage and 20th by victories among NCAA Division II active coaches with a 76-40-13 (.640) all-time record at the start of the 2000 campaign. He is now 85-43-13 (.650) during his collegiate career at Truman.
Truman in the MIAA: The Bulldogs' conference-leading defense, led by Huyck averaging 0.89 goals-per-game, has helped them to the best record in the MIAA. Truman's 2.17 g/gp secures the No. 3 position in team offense. Miller is fifth on the scoring list while Adams and Cepicky are tied for ninth. Miller's 0.42 a/gp is second in the MIAA. Also in the assists category is Adams at fifth, Ell at ninth, and Smith at 10th. Miller finds herself on another list as she ties with teammate Cepicky for seventh with 0.33 g/gp.
