Women's Soccer Team Hosts Three Games This Week

Game 1: Truman State University Bulldogs (Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association/NCAA Division II) vs. Quincy University Lady Hawks (Great Lakes Valley/NCAA Div. II) Wed., 4 p.m.
Game 2: Truman vs. Rockhurst University Lady Hawks (Independent/NCAA Div. II) Sat., noon.
Game 3: Truman vs. St. Joseph's College Lady Pumas (GLV/NCAA Div. II) Sun., noon.

Truman: A commanding win over Northwest Missouri State improved the Bulldogs record to 6-3 and gave them the lead in the MIAA. Truman scoring is led by junior Melissa Miller (Olathe, Kan.), transfer Molly Adams (Omaha, Neb./Marion Tulsa Univ.), and freshman Stephanie Cepicky (St. Louis/ Lindbergh), each with three goals.

Truman vs. Northwest: The Bulldogs jumped out to a first period lead with a goal by Adams, followed by a senior Niki Taylor (Crestwood, Mo./Lindbergh) and sophomore Carrie Hegenderfer (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/John F. Kennedy) combination setting up junior Missy Ell (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) for her first goal of the season. After the break, the 'Dogs exploded scoring nearly one goal every five minutes. Miller found junior Nicole Thorpe (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) to get things started. Junior Kelli Best (Urbandale, Iowa) found the net next, then turned around and dished one up for Miller. The barrage of scoring ended when sophomore Laura Paul (Lee's Summit, Mo./Blue Springs) assisted sophomore Jennifer Brinkman (Rock Hill, Mo./Webser Groves) for her first goal. Ell found sophomore Karla Danekas (Naperville, Ill./Central) in the 88th minute to finish Northwest off. Junior goalkeeper Emily Huyck (Omaha, Neb./Westside) played 90 minutes and posted four saves.

This week's Opponents: Quincy holds a 3-6-1 record with wins over Northwest Missouri 3-0, Missouri Southern 1-0, and Wisconsin-Parkside 3-2. They owe losses to Northern Colorado 1-0, Rockhurst 1-0, Indianapolis 4-3, Northern Kentucky 4-0, Indiana/Purdue-Fort Wayne (Ind.) 2-1, and St. Joseph's (Ind.) 1-0. Quicny tied Lewis (Ill.) 1-1. Lady Hawk scoring is led by Mandy Faser and Meghan Naninger, each with three goals. Goalkeeper Jennifer Varrone has 77 saves.

Rockhurst holds a 5-7 record with wins over Northwest Missouri 2-0, North Dakota State 2-0, Quincy 1-0, Park 1-0, and Benedictine (Ill.) 2-0. They owe losses to Missouri-St. Louis 2-0, Winona State (Minn.) 2-1, Midwestern State (Texas) 3-1, Central Oklahoma 3-2, Southern Illinios-Edwardsville 2-0, Missouri Southern 1-0, and Lindenwood 3-0.

St. Joseph's holds a 3-7 record with wins over Indiana/Purdue-Fort Wayne 3-0, Wisconsin-Parkside 4-1, and Quincy 1-0. They owe losses to Minnesota-Duluth 1-0, Indiana Wesleyan 2-0, St. Cloud State (Minn.) 1-0, Mankato State (Minn.) 3-1, Missouri-St. Louis 3-0, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville 2-1, and Southern Indiana 3-0. Lady Puma scoring is led by Amanda Bailey and Holly Copeland each with two goals. Goalkeeper Heather Budenz has 65 saves.

Series Record: Truman won its last meeting with Quincy, but is down in the series 7-8-1. The Bulldogs post a 4-1-1 record against Rockhurst, shutting them out in the last game 4-0. Against St. Joseph's, Truman owns a 7-5-1 record. Last year, the teams fought through two overtimes before tying 1-1.

Head Coach Mike Cannon: Truman head coach Mike Cannon is in his eighth season with the Bulldogs. He is the winningest coach in Truman history and was ranked 17th by percentage and 20th by victories among NCAA Division II active coaches with a 76-40-13 (.640) all-time record at the start of the 2000 campaign. He is now 82-43-13 (.650) during his collegiate career at Truman.

Truman in the MIAA: The Bulldogs conference-leading defense, led by Huyck averaging 1.17 goals-per-game, has helped them to the best record in the MIAA. Truman's 2.0 g/gp secures the No. 3 position in team offense. Miller and Adams are fifth and ninth respectively on the scoring list. Truman once again fills up the assists category holding six of the top 10 positions: Miller is second, Ell fifth, sophomore Anna Smith (Jefferson City, Mo.) sixth, and Adams, Best, and sophomore Jessica Pohren (Omaha, Neb./Duchesne) in a tie for ninth. Adams, Miller, and Cepicky are tied for eighth averaging .33 g/gp.
