Women's Soccer Team Places 13 Individuals on All-MIAA Squad

The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association released the MIAA coaches' choices for all-conference honors today. Truman placed 13 women on the team, including unanimous first-team choices Emily Huyck (Omaha, Neb./Westside) and Meredith Hartle (Mehlville, Mo.).

Huyck, a junior goalkeeper, led the MIAA with a 0.72 goals against average and posted 13 shutouts for the season in goal. Hartle, a tenacious defender who helped lead the team to a 15-4 record as a senior this year, was also named the conference's MVP. Both women are repeat first-team all-MIAA selections, while Hartle was also a second-team all-region pick a year ago.

Other Truman first-team all-MIAA picks in 2000 were junior defender Nicole Thorpe (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods), freshman defender/midfielder Molly Adams (Omaha, Neb./Marian) and junior midfielder Melissa Miller (Olathe, Kan./Olathe South).

Miller led the team with 18 points on six goals and assists this year, while Adams had 10 points with three goals and assists, and Thorpe scored eight points on three goals and two assists. Miller and Thorpe were second-team picks last year as well.

Second-team honors went to sophomore midfielder Anna Smith (Jefferson City, Mo.) and freshman forward Stephanie Cepicky (St. Louis/Lindbergh). Smith was a second-team selection last year, as well as the league's freshman of the year, and completed the 2000 campaign with nine points on two goals and five assists. Cepicky led the team with seven goals for the year.

Six Bulldogs earned honorable mention all-conference status, including sophomore back Karla Danekas (Naperville, Ill./Central), freshman back Beth Weiman (St. Louis, Mo./Rasati-Kain), junior midfielder Kelli Best (Urbandale, Iowa), junior midfielder Missy Ell (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic), sophomore forward Jessica Pohren (Omaha, Neb./Duchesne) and senior forward Niki Taylor (Crestwood, Mo./Lindbergh). Danekas, Pohren and Taylor were honorable mention picks last year, while Best was a member of the second-team in 1999.

Truman head coach Mike Cannon was named MIAA co-Coach of the year. It was his second-year earning coach of the year status in the MIAA. In 2000, he led the Bulldogs to their second consecutive MIAA title in the two-year sponsorship of women's soccer by the conference. He completed his ninth season with the Bulldogs and has a career record of 91-44-13 (.659) during that time. At the start of the season, he was ranked 17th by percentage and 20th by victories among NCAA Division II active coaches.
