Women's Soccer Regains Conference Lead With Win Over Jennies
The Truman women's soccer squad regained first place in the MIAA race with a 3-0 win over Central Missouri State on Wednesday afternoon at the Truman Soccer Park.
Sloppy field conditions made footing tough but Truman was able to get on the scoreboard first off a set play from senior Stephanie Cepicky (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) sending the ball into traffic in front of the net. Senior Anna Sonderman (Manchester, Mo./Nerinx Hall) picked up the loose ball and used her right foot to drill it into the left corner of the goal for the lead at the 38 minute mark.
In the second half, sophomore Robyn Mortenson (Lake Villa, Ill./Anticoh) picked up her third goal of the season from a pass by senior Sara Murray (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie). For Murray, it was her team leading ninth assist and 35th point of the year.
Senior Ellen Wright (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) picked up the next goal after a scramble in front of the net. Sophomore Maureen Bylina (Chicago, Ill/St. Ignatius Prep) took a pair of shots, with one off the post before Wright stepped in front and put the ball in the goal for her ninth of the season.
Central goalkeeper Andrea Dixon made seven saves in the game, with six coming in the second half. Bulldog keeper Lauren Davis (Springfield, Mo./Kickapoo) made both saves she had opportunities to make today to record her 12th shutout of the season and lower her goals-against average to 0.30.
Truman improves to 14-0-2 overall and 8-0-2 in the MIAA. The Bulldogs
now have 26 points, which is one ahead of Southwest Baptist at 25. The Bearcats
have one game in hand with a 8-0-1 conference mark. Central falls to 4-9-3
on the season and 2-5-3 in conference play. Next up for the Bulldogs will
be a trip to Kansas to face Washburn on Friday and Emporia State on Sunday.
Central will travel to Southwest Baptist on Friday.
