Bulldogs Win Key Regional Battle With Winona State
The Bulldogs, third-ranked nationally, improved to 8-0-1 on the year with a 2-0 blanking of the Winona State Warriors on Family Day Saturday at Truman Soccer Park.
Senior forward Ellen Wright (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) got the ball rolling early for the Bulldogs, taking a pass from junior midfielder Molly Benson (Rockford, Ill./Rockford) in front of the net and knocking it home for a 1-0 lead only 6:19 into the contest.
The Warriors had few opportunities to tie the score, but came very close less than ten minutes later. A breakaway almost notched a goal in the 31st minute, but the shot was just wide of the net.
The Bulldogs spent a vast majority of the first half on the attack, but could only score the one goal.
It was not until late in the second half at the 71:48 mark that Wright gathered in a long pass from Benson and scored for the 2-0 lead. It was Wright's sixth goal of the season and Benson's sixth assist.
Bulldog sophomore goalie Lauren Davis (Springfield, Mo./Kickapoo) saved three shots for her sixth shutout of the year.
Truman statistically dominated the entire contest, outshooting Winona State 12-3 in the first half and 17-5 overall. The Bulldogs also had eight shots on goal to the Warriors' three and had the edge in corner kicks, 6-0.
