Gregg Nurrenbern Takes First Place At Simpson Wrestling Invite; Truman Sixth
The Truman wrestlers competed at the Simpson Invitational in Indianola, Iowa, on Saturday. The team was led by junior Gregg Nurrenbern who was the only winner for the Bulldogs after going 4-0 at 184 pounds. Nurrenbern pinned his first opponent in 1:37 and had a major decision over his next foe (16-4). He won his final two matches of the day by decisions, 9-2 and 6-0.
No. 1 seed, junior Merrick Meyer, placed second at 141 pounds and was 3-1 for the day, with two major decisions.
Junior Allen Stokes finished in third-place at 125 pounds with a record of 4-1. Stokes was the No. 4 seed at 125, and pinned his first opponent in 2:31 and registered two major decisions.
Junior Tom Tajkowski was sixth at 165 pounds, going 2-3 for the day. The No. 3 seed, Tajkowski lost a close decision (2-0) to the sixth-seed and went to the consolation bracket where he pinned his first two opponents, before losing another close decision, 6-4.
Freshman Gordon Harrison came in fourth at 174 pounds with a record of 2-2, and junior Tom Tajkowski rounded out Truman's place finishers, coming in sixth at 165 pounds with a record of 2-3 for the day.
Harrison was the fourth-seed and knocked off the fifth-seed by a major decision (11-0), before falling into the consolation bracket after a loss to the top-seeded wrestler at 174 pounds. He again registered a major decision (11-2), this time over the No. 6 seed, but lost a three-point decision in the third-place match.
Tajkowski was on the losing end of a 2-0 decision in his first match, but pinned his first two foes in the consolation bracket in 5:08 and 4:41, respectively.
Sophomore Steve Cox was the fourth-seed at 133, but fell into the consolation bracket after losing his first decision. He won his next match by decision, but fell 6-2 in his final bout of the day.
Freshman Johnathan Horman went 1-1 at 197 pounds, picking up his only win of the day by a 7-5 decision.
The fifth-seed, junior Matt Sonn, posted a record of 1-2 at 285 pounds, and brought home his first win of the season after a pin (3:03) of the No. 3 seed in the consolation bracket.
Freshman Scott Skinner was 0-2 at 149 pounds and No. 7 seed Kelley Latting went 0-2 at 157 pounds.
Truman finished sixth out nine teams overall.
The Bulldogs return to the mats on Saturday when they travel to another invitational in Iowa, this time at Central College in Pella. The 'Dogs are 2-3 in duals for the season.
