Pickering Qualifies for NCAA Division II Championships
The Truman State University wrestling team traveled to the University of Minnesota, Moorhead to compete at the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Championships on Saturday.
At 184 pounds, sophomore Wyatt Pickering (Chillicothe, Mo.) qualified for the national meet with a fourth-place finish and a 2-2 record for the day.
Pickering has posted a record of 5-4 since joining the team in late January. He competed in just two meets before attending the NCAA Midwest regionals and making the national cut.
Pickering was the only Truman athlete to qualify for the national championships. He fell to the consolation bracket after losing to the No. 2 seed John Rolling from Central Missouri. However, Pickering defeated the fourth seed, Erik Johnson from MSUM in the consolation semifinal and No. 3 seed Joey Krause in the consolation final.
Freshman 157-pounder Kelly Latting finished the day with a record of 2-3, while Grant Strickland finished fifth at 125 pounds with a record of 3-2 for the day.
Sophomore Corey Crandall was 1-2 at 165 pounds.
Phillip Esposito was 0-2 at 133 pounds; Phillip Wilkey went 0-2 at 141 pounds; Lewis Marshall was 0-2 at 149 pounds; Bo Rinehart was 0-2 at 174 pounds; Nate Kessen was 0-2 at 197 pounds; and Don Cummings was 0-2 at 285 pounds.
The Bulldogs final dual record for the year is 2-11.
The NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships will take place in Greeley, Colo., March 9-10.
