Mar. 11, 2008 – Truman State University’s Director of Athletics Jerry Wollmering has announced that Women’s Basketball Coach John Sloop’s contract will not be renewed for next season and a search for a new coach will begin as soon as possible.

Sloop was 87-131 (.399) in eight seasons on the Truman bench and 35-112 (.238) in MIAA games played.  The team qualified for the conference championship tournament only four times with this season’s seventh seed the highest during his tenure.

“After finishing eight straight seasons below .500 in conference play, it was decided we needed to move in a new direction in our women’s basketball program,” said Wollmering.

“We appreciate John’s years of service to the University and effort he put in trying to make our basketball program the best on and off the court.  I wish John the best in his future endeavors.”

Under Sloop, six Bulldogs have been named to one of the MIAA’s all-conference team a total of nine times.  Four of Truman’s 10 all-time first-team all-MIAA picks have played for Coach Sloop (Georgia Mueller, twice, Jennifer Perkins and Sarah Sommer).

Prior to taking over the women’s program, Sloop was an assistant coach on the Bulldog men’s team from 1995-2000.
