June 26, 2008 - Truman Track & Field student-athlete Christen Lauer (St. Louis, Mo.; Lutheran South) was awarded one of 58 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships Tuesday by the NCAA. Lauer graduated in May with a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science and was an Outdoor all-American this spring after finishing sixth in the triple jump at the 2008 NCAA Division II Track & Field Championships.
Per the NCAA’s official release: “A total of 58 (29 for men and 29 for women) one-time, nonrenewable grants of $7,500 each are available during each of three sports seasons (fall, winter, spring). The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition.
“The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship was created in 1964 to promote and encourage postgraduate education by rewarding the Association's most accomplished student-athletes through their participation in NCAA championship and/or emerging sports.”
At the National Competition in 2008, Lauer posted a mark of 12.05 meters in the women’s triple jump competition and finished just .01 meters shy of fifth place.
Also this season, Lauer finished third in total points at the MIAA conference meet after winning the triple jump competition and placing second in both the long jump and the 200-meter dash.
She also ran with the first-place 4x400 relay squad and the second-place 4x100 relay group at the MIAA meet.
