Large Signing Class For Truman Wrestling

***Updated July 17, 2008***

June 12, 2008 – Truman wrestling coach David Schutter has announced that nine student-athletes will be joining next year’s squad.

“The 2008 signing class is very good and I am very excited about the quality of this group” said Schutter.

“We have been able to get wrestlers that are talented enough to help us win the MIAA Duals in February, the Midwest Regional in March and numbers that will provide us excellent depth and competition at all positions.”

The Bulldogs will begin their season on Saturday, November 1st when they will travel to the interstate rival Lindenwood University for their annual Open Tournament.

Truman will be part of the MIAA Duals on Sunday, February 15 hosted by Central Missouri. Teams competing will be University of Central Missouri, University of Nebraska-Omaha, Fort Hays State University and Truman State University.

Truman will also play host in 2009 to the NCAA DII Midwest Regional on Sunday, March 1. Nine teams will be competing in the Midwest Regional including three from the MIAA.

Alex Maus – Kennesaw, Georgia.

Maus posted 186 career wins and placed 3rd at 135-lbs at the Georgia State Tournament in class 5A with 65-5 record his senior season.  In 2007, Maus placed 4th at state with record of 58-11 and went 9-0 at NHSCA National Duals that summer.

Maus placed 6th earning H.S. All-American as a junior at the NHSCA Nationals held in South Carolina.

Schutter on Maus: “Alex has an excellent speed and strength. He has a frame at 6’0 which will allow him to be a big time wrestler in Division II. His intelligence, character and work ethic will allow him to become a dominant 141 or 149 wrestler for the Bulldogs. Like all of our wrestlers at Truman, Alex is very intelligent. He was one of the top recruits in Georgia, and with 65 wins this season is ready for the grind of a college wrestling season. In addition to being a very good athlete, Alex is wrestler of high character, and I’m looking forward to having him in our program.”

Tyler Bise – Adrian, Missouri

Bise is a two-time Missouri State champion in class 2A at 152-lbs.  Bise is transferring to Truman from the University of Wisconsin-Lacrosse.

Schutter on Bise: “Of all of our recruits, Tyler is as impressive as any of them.  He has impressive power combined with heart and wrestles with incredible effort and a burning desire to be the best. He’s going to be an All-American and Academic All-American for the Bulldogs. Tyler was a great pick-up for Truman State University Athletic Department”

Zach Hayes – Maryland Heights, Missouri

Hayes placed 4th at 215-lbs. at the 2008 Class 3A Missouri High School State Championship for Parkway North High School. He was 35-8 this season and is a two-time state qualifier.

Schutter on Hayes: “I have been high on Zach Hayes since the fall.  As time has progressed I have become more and more impressed with Zach.  He is an outstanding upperweight, who moves well and likes physical contact.  After seeing him wrestle live, I like his toughness and physicality.”

James Crone – Jerseyville, Illinois

Crone is a two-time Illinois AA Class state qualifier. He posted a record of 36-6 this season at 119-lbs.

Schutter on Crone: “James is a intelligent wrestler who competes with a “never quit” attitude.  He is big enough to wrestle at 133-lbs. if needed next season but his future is most likely at 125-lbs. for the Bulldogs. James understands what it takes to be a champion through his nutrition and training habits.”

Maxwell Muench – St. Louis, Missouri

Muench placed 6th in the 189 pound weight class at the Class 3A Missouri High School championships and finished his senior season with record of 36-6. He is a two-time state qualifier for Mehlville H.S.

Schutter on Muench: “Maxwell is one of our top prospects.  He comes from an outstanding high school program where he put together a very successful career.  He has an excellent combination of speed, power and skills. He has spent several years with Purler Academy improving on technique. I expect him to compete for the top spot and be an impact player immediately at 184-lbs. Maxwell made it to the semi-finals match of state but then an injury in the match most likely cost him a State Championship. Maxwell finished the tournament on basically one leg but would not default or quit!”

John Housley – Grove, Okla.

Housley placed twice in two different weight classes while a member of the Grove High School team.  Housley was third in 2007 in the 135 pound bracket while also placing third at the Mid-American National Championship that summer.  In his senior season, Housley placed fourth in the 145 pound weight class and won 37 matches while dropping just eight.  For his high school career, Housley was 100-44.

Schutter on Housley: “John has an excellent speed and strength. His intelligence, character and work ethic will allow him to become a dominant 141/149 wrestler for the Bulldogs. Housley keeps the Truman State University Wrestling “Pipeline” connected with the state of Oklahoma. He has the All-American potential on both the academic and athletic side for Truman State University

In addition to the National Letter of Intent signees above the following wrestlers will join the program.

Damon Locke – Riverside, Missouri

Locke was a Class 4A state qualifier at 189-lbs. for Park Hill South with a record 23-6.

Jeff Graber – McPherson, Kansas

Graber placed 4th in 2008 at 171-lbs. with a record of 25-9 and placed 6th in 2007 in the 5A Kansas championships for McPherson High School.

Chad Griesemer – Brentwood, Missouri

Griesemer is a two-time state qualifier at 135-lbs. in Class 1.

Ben Barndollar – Owensville, Missouri

Barndollar was a state qualifier at 215-lbs. with 22-6 record.
