Sept. 1, 2008 – Truman volleyball libero Whitney Boehler and women’s soccer goalkeeper Denise Childress were selected as MIAA Players of the Week for the week of play ending August 31. Both players received the honor for the first time in their careers.

Boehler, a 5-10 senior from Olathe, Kan., received “Specialist of the Week” accolades after averaging 4.75 digs per set as the No. 3-ranked Bulldogs went 4-0 at the Missouri S&T “Middle of Everywhere Classic” last weekend.

She had 25 digs in a five-set season-opening win Friday (Aug. 29) against Missouri-St. Louis, while adding one ace. In a sweep of No. 6 Grand Valley (Mich.) State later in the day, Boehler had 11 digs and two aces.

The next day, she had 23 digs in a 3-2 win over North Alabama. It was Boehler's 20th 20-dig match of her career, leaving her one shy of matching Neely Forbes’ career school record of 21. She ended the tournament with 17 digs, an ace and a kill in a sweep of the host Lady Miners.

Childress, a 5-7 junior goalkeeper from St. Louis, Mo., was named “Defensive Player of the Week” after shutting out two opponents in her first two collegiate starts.

In a 1-0 win over Quincy (Ill.) Friday (Aug. 29), Childress made three saves -- two coming in the scoreless first half before the Bulldogs took the lead in the 54th minute on a goal by Jessica Wiegert.

On Sunday (Aug. 31), she recorded another 1-0 victory, this one against Midwestern (Texas) State. Four of her seven saves came in the opening half before Truman took the lead in the 50th minute on Katie Reuck’s goal.

The Truman volleyball squad is back in action for four matches at the Nebraska-Kearney Classic this weekend, while the women’s soccer team hits the road for a pair of matches in Edmond, Okla.
