Nov. 16, 2008 – (DENTON, TEXAS) Junior Georgia Mueller’s shot as time expired was turned away, and the Bulldog women’s basketball team dropped another close match at the Texas Woman’s Invitational on Sunday. Truman lost 57-55 to the host Pioneers and fell to 0-2 on the season.
Mueller led all Bulldogs with 13 points, as Truman crawled back from an 11-point deficit midway through the second half to have a shot at tying the game in the closing seconds. Jessica Hanna had a jump shot blocked by Mueller with 15 seconds to play, setting up a shot with two seconds left by Bulldog guard Laura Joya. Joya’s attempt ricocheted off a Pioneer defender out of bounds, setting up Truman’s final chance.
However, Mueller’s shot was deflected by TWU’s Renee Renz as the buzzer sounded, handing Truman its second loss in as many days at the TWU Premiere.
Joining Mueller in double-figures were Malorie Kiecker (10 points) and Erin Mayes (10 points), while Joya added eight points and a team-high 12 rebounds. Turnovers plagued the purple and white for the second consecutive night, as the squad committed 28 on the evening.
Renz led TWU (2-0) with 20 points and added 10 rebounds for a double-double, while Tiandrea Dixon tacked on 10 points and eight assists.
Truman returns home to face Quincy (Ill.) University on Wednesday night. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
