EVANSVILLE, Indiana – Junior guard Julie Guinn posted a career-high 16 points, but a seven minute scoreless drought late in the first half allowed the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles to take an 18-point halftime lead and hold on for a 67-50 decision against the Truman women’s basketball team on Monday afternoon.
Guinn hit five of her six field goals, including a pair of three-pointers and free throws, to help Truman (3-7) pull to within nine points midway through the second half, but USI (6-4) rattled off an 11-3 run over the next four minutes to widen the gap to 17 with just eight minutes to play. The junior from Holden, Mo., was perfect from the field on the day.
The Bulldogs rebounded from a 14-point first half effort to score 36 in the second 20 minutes. The squad shot 47% from the field for the game – compared to just 43% for the host Screaming Eagles – but turned the ball over 25 times resulting in 19 additional field goal opportunities for USI.
Outside of Guinn’s team-high 16 points, no other Bulldog cracked double-figures, as senior Georgia Mueller battled foul trouble and scored just nine points in 15 minutes of action. Sophomore Malorie Kiecker and freshman Breanna Daniels tacked on six points apiece, while junior Sarah Seberger added five points and a team-high five rebounds.
Ellen Young led all USI players with 12 points and garnered 11 rebounds for a double-double. Brittany Neuman added 11 points on five-of-eight shooting.
Truman will take the next week off before hitting the hardwood next Monday (Dec. 29) night at 5:30 p.m. against No. 9 Emporia State in Pershing Arena. The Bulldogs lost the season series 2-1 to the Lady Hornets last season, but upset second-seeded ESU in the first-round of the MIAA tournament with a 77-70 win as the No. 7 seed. The Lady Hornets are 9-1 (3-0 MIAA) this season and are coming off a 119-35 home win against Harris-Stowe (Mo.) on Saturday.
