Jan. 7, 2009 – Senior Georgia Mueller came off the bench to score a game-high 21 points, but the Bulldogs couldn’t close to within three after falling behind by nine at the break and fell 68-62 on the road Wednesday night at Nebraska-Omaha.
The Bulldogs (3-11, 0-7 MIAA) shot 34% from the field for the night but out-rebounded the host Mavericks (6-5, 3-3) by 12 (44-32) and converted better than 80% of its free throw chances to stay close throughout the night.
Mueller converted a three-point play with 15:19 to play in the first half to put the Bulldogs ahead 7-5, but UNO rattled off a 12-0 run during a six minute dry spell from the ’Dogs, as another Mueller bucket cut the Mavericks’ new lead to 17-9 with 8:55 remaining the first half.
UNO would push the lead to 12 three times – for the final time with 16:40 left in the game – before Truman mounted a rally to close to within three at 48-45 on a Mueller jumper with 8:34 to play.
An 8-2 Mavs burst widened the gap to nine just minutes later, but a sold second half from the charity stripe helped Truman press to a 66-62 deficit off a Breanna Daniels lay-up with 16 seconds left. A quick foul by the Bulldogs sent UNO’s Alyssa Green to the line, where she promptly missed both.
Senior Eli Medina worked an open look from the right wing for three, but her shot grazed off the side of the rim to end Truman’s chance at a last-second rally.
Mueller finished as the lone Bulldog in double-figures with 21 on five-of-15 shooting and a perfect 11-for-11 effort from the stripe. Freshman Erin Mayes chipped in nine points and a career-high eight rebounds, while junior Laura Joya added eight points on a perfect night from the field.
Three Mavericks finished in double-figures, led by 6-foot-4 forward Ashley Nelson’s 16.
