Jan. 28, 2009 – A red-hot three-point attack was enough for visiting Pittsburg State on Wednesday night, as the Truman women’s basketball team gave up 12 three-pointers and had just five players score in an 87-62 loss in Pershing Arena.

Truman (4-15, 1-11 MIAA) led 11-9 just four minutes into the first half before the Gorillas (14-5, 9-3 MIAA) rattled off a 12 point run to take a 21-11 lead with 13 minutes to play in the opening frame. From there, the Bulldogs could only cut the deficit to less than double-figures one more time, as Pittsburg State kept the pressure on throughout the night by turning 18 Truman turnovers into 29 points.

Senior Georgia Mueller had a game-high 21 points and added five rebounds, while junior Laura Joya posted a balanced 16 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Sophomore Malorie Kiecker scored 13 points, and freshman Breanna Daniels added ten points off the bench for the ’Dogs.

For the game, Truman shot 44% but went just one-for-eight from behind the arc. On the other end, Pitt State used a 60% first half to propel themselves to a 52% final mark from the field and hit nearly 50% of their three-pointers (12-for-26). Four Gorillas scored double-figures, led by Caitlin Demarest’s 19 and Brianna Buchanan’s 18.

Truman will head to fourth-ranked Emporia State on Sunday afternoon for a 1:30 p.m. tip-off. ESU leads the MIAA with an 11-1 mark and defeated the Bulldogs 86-73 earlier this season in Kirksville.
