WARRENSBURG, Mo. – The Bulldog baseball team fell behind early in game one, then gave up a pair of two-run innings late in game two on Friday afternoon in Warrensburg, as Truman lost both games of a twinbill at the University of Central Missouri, 10-4 and 4-2.
The Bulldogs got on the board first in game one when freshman SS Steven Rose brought in freshman C Devon Myers on a sacrifice fly, but UCM retaliated with three in the first, four in the second and three more in the third to build up an early 10-1 lead. Truman would get two back in the fourth and one in the sixth on a homerun and a sacrifice fly by sophomore 3B Drew Garwood, but the Bulldogs left six on base for the game and squandered a bases loaded, one-out opportunity in the sixth on an inning-ending double play.
In game two, Truman jumped out to a 2-0 lead behind a Jeff Davison third-inning long ball and a Myers fielders choice that plated Garwood in the fifth against Mule ace Brooks Martin. UCM got two back in the fifth against Bulldog starter Kyle Veazey and two more in the sixth on a triple by the squad’s No. 8 hitter. Tyler Stefan pitched a scoreless 2.2 innings in relief to hold the Mules in check, but the Bulldogs couldn’t crack the tough UCM bullpen and recorded just one hit in the final three innings.
Michael Staihr (3-2) and Veazey (0-5) picked up the losses on the mound for Truman (9-35, 6-24 MIAA), while outfielders Keaton Jones and Kenny Swanson each recorded two hits on the day. Garwood finished with three RBI – all accumulated in game one.
The Bulldogs and Mules (28-10, 18-8) will look to close out their four-game set with a 2 pm doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
