June 18, 2009 – Junior men’s golfers Andy Herington, Chris Kovach and Vincent Kurth have advanced to the 2009 Missouri Amateur Championship, to be held June 23-28 at St. Joseph Country Club in St. Joseph, Mo., after qualifying at regional sites earlier this month.
Herington shot a 73 at the Columbia regional to finish in a tie for third, while Kovach (t-16, 77) and Kurth (t-27, 78) each advanced out of the St. Louis and Kansas City regionals. Sophomore Eric Butler also competed in Columbia and shot an 80, but his t-20 finish wasn’t high enough to advance to the Championship.
Competition continues for the three aforementioned golfers on June 23-24 with a pair of 18-hole rounds before the field is cut to 64 for a subsequent match-play tournament, held June 25-28 at the same site.
Kovach was just one of three Bulldogs to compete in all eight events last season and posted four rounds under par – including a round of 68 at the Drury (Mo.) Invitational – while both Herington and Kurth recorded single rounds in the 70s at the MIAA tournament with Kurth playing as an individual.
