Oct. 10, 2009 – The Truman women’s soccer team lit up the scoreboard on Senior Day, as a pair of forwards – senior Isabel Gaeta and freshman Olivia Hayes – scored twice each en route to a 5-0 Bulldog romp of Southwest Baptist on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Jaclyn Schumann got the ’Dogs (9-2-2, 8-1 MIAA) on the board in just the game’s ninth minute by connecting on a header off a Riley Mahn corner kick. Gaeta then converted on a fluid play in the 20th minute, finishing a Kelsey Twellman cross and burying it in the back of the net for a 2-0 Bulldog edge. Hayes then picked up her first goal of the match with just less than 15 minutes to play in the opening frame after being taken down in the box and out-guessing the SBU (5-6-1, 3-6 MIAA) goalkeeper on a penalty kick for a three-goal edge.
Gaeta (65’) and Hayes (72’) then put an exclamation point on the afternoon for the Bulldogs – who routed the Bearcats for the second straight Saturday after shutting down SBU, 4-0, in Bolivar one week ago. Mahn and Beth Bystrom picked up helpers on the ’Dogs’ final two goals, while Hayes increased her season-long goal total to 10, the MIAA’s highest mark.
Truman goalkeepers Jayne Grisham and Alison Taylor – along with the Bulldog back line – combined for the squad’s seventh straight shutout, as Grisham made six saves in her 67 minutes of work. A pair of defenders picked up team saves by corralling two SBU shots coming off corners that were destined to snap what is now a shutout streak that has surpassed the 600-minute mark dating back to Sept. 12.
The Bulldogs will continue a stretch of four matches in eight days with a Monday afternoon make-up contest against Central Missouri at the Truman Soccer Pitch. That match is scheduled for a 2 pm start.
