Nov. 7, 2009 – The Truman women’s soccer team captured its ninth MIAA title in 11 years on Saturday and will now advance to the 2009 NCAA tournament by earning the conference’s automatic qualifier. The Bulldogs, who will play next at a to-be-determined site on Friday, Nov. 13, clinched the championship when Central Missouri knocked off Nebraska-Omaha, 1-0, in Warrensburg, Mo., on Saturday afternoon.
With Truman’s 2-0 victory over Emporia State on Thursday in its final match of the regular season, the Bulldogs finished 13-2-1 in the conference with 40 points. After UNO’s double-overtime draw at Southwest Baptist on Thursday, the Mavericks (38 points) needed to beat Central Missouri on Saturday to win the MIAA championship.
However, UCM scored in the 61st minute at home and held on to deal UNO its second conference loss to go with its two ties and propel the Bulldogs into the postseason.
Truman, ranked fifth in the final regular season regional rankings, is headed to the playoffs for the eighth time in program history and seventh since 2001. The Bulldogs completed the MIAA season two points ahead of UNO (fourth in the final regular season regional rankings) and three points ahead of UCM (ninth in the final regular season rankings).
The 2009 NCAA tournament bracket will be released on Monday, Nov. 9 at 6 pm (central) via a Web cast selection show on NCAA.com.
