(ELSAH, Ill.) – The Truman women’s tennis team opened up its spring season this past weekend at the Principia (Ill.) College indoor tournament, winning three doubles championships and reaching the championship match of all three singles brackets. Sophomore Dagmar Velez gave up just four games in six sets between her singles and doubles play.
Freshman Maggi Schutte and junior Amy Ochs took second and third place in Flight A of singles play, while sophomore Ellen Russell, junior Kelsey Kuykendall, Velez and freshman Lauren Higgins all reached the championship matches of their respective flights. Since the quartet were scheduled to face each other in some capacity, those championship matches weren’t played.
In doubles action, Ochs and Russell teamed up for top honors in Flight 1, with Kuykendall and Velez winning 8-0 in the flight two championship. The all-freshmen team of Schutte and Higgins were Flight three’s top tandem, winning 8-1 in the championship match.
The Bulldogs are off until March 17 when they host Nebraska-Kearney in the first home event of the spring season.
