(CANTON, Ohio) – The Truman women’s swimming team notched its best relay finish so far at the 2010 NCAA Championships, finishing fourth in the 800 freestyle relay en route to jumping into sixth place in the team standings on the third day of competition. Junior Tanya Sylvester picked up two more all-American honors while senior Kate Aherne garnered her 25th career all-American award.
Sylvester (Rochester, Minn; Century) was the top finisher in the ‘B’-finals of the 200 Fly, finishing at a season-best 2:04.92. She also competed with Aherne (Cary, Ill; Cary-Grove), senior Kendra Brunkow (Firth, Neb.; Norris-Beatrice) and freshman Lexi Houser (New Hope, Pa.; New Hope-Solebury) as part of the 800 free relay squad which came in fourth with a time of 7:31.84. That crew added 30 points to Truman’s team score, which finished day three in sixth place with 189 total points.
The Bulldogs moved ahead one spot on the evening and sit just five points behind Clarion University for fifth place going into the final day of competition.
Junior Anna Grinter (Manhattan, Kan.; Manhattan) picked up her first all-American honor of the 2010 Championships with a sixth-place finish in the 200 Fly (2:03.92), while freshman Stacey Wymer (New Lenox, Ill.; Lincoln-Way Central HS) notched her second all-American award in as many days with a 15th-place finish in 100 Back (57.54). Junior Emily Buss (St. Louis, Mo.; Lafayette) replicated Wymer with a 15th-place time of her own in the 100 Breast, adding two more points to Truman’s team total with a 1:05.82 time.
Two of Truman’s other juniors - Julia Jones (Daphne, Ala.; Daphne) and Claire Myers (Ellisville, Mo.; Lafayette) – took high honors in the ‘B’-final of the 500 Free, with Jones coming in 10th at 5:01.44 and Myers right behind her in 11th at 5:03.47.
The Bulldogs’ lone male representative at the Championships, freshman Jerod Simek (O’Fallon, Mo.; Fort Zumwalt West HS), continued to make waves of his own in notching his second all-American accolade of the event with a 14th-place finish in the 500 Free. Simek finished with a time of 4:34.82.
Two other women were in action on Friday, with freshman Allison Harding (West Des Moines, Iowa; Valley) coming in 26th in the 500 Free (5:09.13) and sophomore Jessica Jenkot (Orland Park, Ill.; Carl Sandburg) finishing 27th in the 100 Breast (1:06.43).
The final day of the 2010 Championships comes on Saturday, with action in the 1650-yard freestyle (Harding, Jones, Myers, Simek), the 100-yard freestyle (Aherne, Brunkow, Jenkot), the 200-yard backstroke (Grinter, Wymer), the 200-yard breaststroke (Birsa, Buss) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (Aherne, Brunkow, Jenkot, Sylvester). All 13 of Truman’s swimmers will be in action on the event’s final day.
