April 18, 2010 – The Truman Softball team ended the MIAA Crossover tournament with a victory over Pittsburg State (3-2) and a tough 7-6 extra inning loss to rival Central Missouri on Sunday.  The Bulldogs will be back in action on Wednesday at Quincy University.

The Bulldogs went 3-2 over the course of three days while Erica LaCombe led the team with a .500 batting average (7-of-14) with two doubles and three RBIs.

 

vanGennip had two home runs and six RBIs while throwing 15 innings and striking out 19 hitters.  She had a no-hitter on Friday against SBU.

Ashley Rotkvich picked up the win and Richelle vanGennip got the save as the Bulldogs held on for a 3-2 victory in the first meeting with the Gorillas in 2010. 

 

vanGennip put Truman on the board in the first inning with single to drive in both Alex Weber and Laura Miller.

 

Pitt got a run back in the second but Meredith Kusky drove in Erica LaCombe in the third that held up as the game winner.

 

The Gorillas added a run in the sixth before vanGennip was summoned from the bullpen and struck out four of the seven batters she faced for her second save of the season.

Both teams were leaving runners on base through the first four innings before the Jennies broke the scoreless game when Jessica Marble hit a three-run home run off vanGennip.

 

The Bulldogs exploded for a six run sixth inning with the biggest blow coming from vanGennip and a two-run homer to center.

 

Marble homered again in the bottom of the seventh to close the game to within one run and the Jennies were able to put across the tying run on a wild pitch with two outs in the frame.

 

In the ninth, playing the tie-break rules of placing a runner on second, Kasey Martin singled in Marble for the winning run.

 

Truman stranded 12 while the Jennies left 10 on base.

 

Beth Schnurbusch was tagged with the loss while Sarah Espy was the winning pitcher for the Jennies.

 


April 17, 2010 – Erica LaCombe when 3-for-4 and Mary Manley and Meredith Kusky each drove in a pair as the Bulldog Softball team defeated Missouri Southern on Saturday in Maryville at the MIAA Crossover tournament.

Alex Weber and LaCombe led off the Bulldog half of the first inning with consecutive singles and were driven in on a double to left by Manley.

 

The Lions got a run back in the second on a solo home run by Jessica Brooks off Truman starter Beth Schnurbusch.

 

In the third, LaCombe and Laura Miller both reached and Kusky came up with the two-out double to score both runners.

 

Kristin Grossman singled in Emily Huntze in the fifth for an insurance run as Schnurbusch went the distance for her fourth victory of the season.

 

The Bulldogs will have an early wake-up call on Sunday as they will face Pittsburg State at 10:00 a.m. followed by Central Missouri later in the day.



April 16, 2010 –  Richelle vanGennip no-hit the SBU Bearcats in a 5-0 victory as the Truman Softball team went 1-1 on the first day of the MIAA Crossover tournament in Maryville.  The Bulldogs lost a hard fought battle to #4 Emporia State 6-4 in the opener.

The Bulldogs took an early lead on the nation’s fourth ranked team as Kristin Grossman homered with two out in the second to plate Mary Manley, who reached on a fielding error.

 

However Division II’s top hitter, Miranda Campbell, hit a three-run home run to left field that was followed by a solo shot by Abby Hughes to give Emporia State a 4-2 lead.

 

The two teams exchanged runs in both the fourth and fifth innings with Richelle vanGennip hitting her third home run in seven days for the Bulldogs.

 

Ashley Rotkvich was tagged with the loss as she allowed five earned runs in six innings while Jennifer Heerey improved to 16-1 and Paige Ladenburger picked up her second save.

vanGennip tossed the sixth Truman no-hitter since 2000 and first since Loni Wedemeier in 2005 in a 5-0 dominance over Southwest Baptist.

 

vanGennip fanned eight and walked three en route to her 10th victory of the season.

 

Laura Miller put Truman on the board in the bottom of the first with an RBI double to right center.  Katie Pitts doubled in Sierra Baechle in the second while vanGennip doubled in Miller in the third.

 

Erica LaCombe rounded out the double parade with a two-run double in the fourth inning that closed the scoring.

 

The Bearcats came into the game having won their earlier games against Fort Hays State and Central Missouri and their last five games.
