April 30, 2010 – Laura Miller’s two run homer and RBI single in the sixth gave the Truman Softball team a key split in an MIAA twinbill with
Miller went 3-for-4 in the nightcap as the freshman scored after reaching on a double in the fourth. She then hit the ball over the left field wall in the fifth inning to put the Bulldogs up 3-0.
In the seventh, Miller singled up the middle to plate Katie Pitts in which proved to be a key run.
In the bottom of the inning, the Gorillas loaded the bases to bring the tying run to the dish.
Richelle vanGennip, who started the second game after coming being tagged with a relief loss in game one, got the final two outs on a fielder’s choice and a called third strike.
In the first game, vanGennip came in for Beth Schnurbusch in the third inning and allowed a run in the fourth.
The Gorillas took a 2-0 lead with an unearned run in the sixth only to watch as the Bulldogs rally in their last at bat.
vanGennip came up with two on and two out and delivered the game-tying single through the right side to score both Erica LaCombe and Alex Weber.
However in the bottom of the inning, Lindsay Birchfield took the second pitch she saw from vanGennip over the left field fense to give the Gorillas a 3-2 walk-off winner.
With the split, Truman improves to 20-29 overall and 7-9 in the MIAA. The Bulldogs are within a game of clinching a spot in the MIAA tournament with Southwest Baptist’s doubleheader loss to Nebraska-Omaha on Friday.
