MACOMB, Ill. – Three freshmen and a sophomore placed for the Truman Men’s Tennis team at the Western Illinois University tournament over the weekend.  Kirk Schlueter, and Mike Merchant each took third place in their respective brackets.

 

Schlueter played in two, three-set matches to get into the semifinals of the number four men’s bracket.  He defeated Felipe Naranjo of Missouri-St. Louis 4-6, 7-5, 10-8 before knocking off Western Illinois’ Jim Capalbo 7-5, 3-6, 10-6.  He fell in straight sets (6-3, 6-1) to Lewis University’s Jesse Hardacre but took the third place match by default.

 

Merchant, competing in the number five bracket won his opening round match 6-3, 6-4 over Quincy University’s Lane Luhring and needed three sets to defeat Wisconsin-Whitewater’s () Krieger 7-5, 5-7, 10-7.  He fell in the semifinals to Olivet’s Landon Williams in straight sets.

 

In his third place match, Merchant defeated Aaron Guenther of Illinois Wesleyan in straight sets.

 

Joe Murphy-Baum took home a fourth place finish in the number six draw with a 2-2 record while sophomore Jonathon Gooch was also fourth in the seventh draw.

 

The men are scheduled to host Missouri Baptist in Kirksville on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. in the home opener for the Bulldogs.
