Former Truman men’s soccer player Martin Clayes returns to Kirksville this fall for his second season as the top women’s soccer assistant coach. Clayes was a four-time letterwinner from 2002-2005 and was part of two NCAA Tournament teams, including the 2003 squad that advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight.
Clayes led Truman’s squad in assists all four seasons and currently sits second on the program’s all-time career assist chart with 38. He was a first-team all-American in 2005 after leading the team to a Sweet 16 appearance, scoring a team-leading nine goals and dishing out a team-best 16 assists for 34 total points. His 98 career points (30 goals, 38 assists) is also good for second-best in Truman history.
He was an all-region selection in both 2004 and 2005, and he was also named Team MVP each of those seasons.
Clayes assisted men’s head coach Duke Cochran with the 2006 men’s squad before working as a personal trainer in St. Louis.
He played with the St. Louis Lions of the USL in both 2007 and 2008, earning the 2007 midfielder of the year award from the Lions coaching staff. While playing for St. Louis, Clayes started all but one game and was a team captain in 2008.
Clayes continued coaching with a U14 club in St. Louis and at St. Albans HS.
