Wallie Kuchinski is in his third year as the defensive line coach for the Bulldog football team. Last spring, he was also promoted as the Bulldogs Defensive Coordinator.
Kuchinski has also served in other capacities under Coach Currier. He has been the strength and condition coach, recruiting coordinator and equipment coordinator.
Under Kuchinski’s coaching, junior Les Hammers had a breakout year on the defensive line during the 2006 season.
Hammers earned second team all-conference honors and three MIAA Defensive Player of the Week honors.
In addition to Hammers’ success, the Bulldog defense in 2006 showed significant improvement in all defensive stat categories.
The Bulldogs were fifth in the league, allowing opponents to just 324.2 ypg and had the fifth best red-zone defense.
In 2005, Kuchinski helped two defensive linemen earn all-conference honors. Steven Holman and Andy Swedenhjelm both earned honorable mention all-MIAA honors.
Even more impressive about that fact is that Holman was in just his second season on the defensive side of the ball and Swedenhjelm was a true freshman.
In 2004, one defensive lineman earned all-conference honors in Ted Guisinger. Kuchinski helped Truman rank in the upper half of the MIAA in sacks that year.
Prior to coming to Truman, Kuchinski held the same position at Concordia-St. Paul for one season. He also previously coached the defensive line for a spring at Bemidji State, and was the head eighth grade coach in 2002 at Bemidji Middle School.
Kuchinski was a four-year starter at Bemidji State. In 2000, he led the nation in tackles for losses and his senior year, he was the conference sack leader. He was named a team captain in 2001 and was an unanimous first-team all-conference selection. He was a member of the most successful Bemidji team in school history, which went 9-2 in 2000.
He graduated from Bemidji State with a bachelors degree in physical education and earned his masters in education from Concordia.
